Bird Rock: La Jolla’s Neighborhood Gem

Bird Rock is a charming beachside community in South La Jolla that used to be little more than a quick route from Pacific Beach to downtown La Jolla, making it difficult for businesses to thrive there. After installing roundabouts and narrowing La Jolla Boulevard from four lanes to two in 2005, the area has experienced a renaissance of sorts. Surf shops, coffee houses, and boutique shops line the main road, making for a fun and interesting morning or afternoon walk. The coastline is rocky with vista points and a couple of small parks along the shore so there is no “beach walk” per se, but you will not be disappointed by the views from the sidewalk.

Look for Bird Rock’s namesake…a large rock just offshore at the end of Bird Rock Avenue that used to be vaguely shaped like a bird until a storm finally collapsed it in 2010.
