Carlsbad: The Village by the Sea

The city's name was inspired by the famed Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad, now Karlovy Vary, in the Czech Republic. Its founders believed that the local mineral spring water had similar healing properties to the European counterpart, which led to the name "Carlsbad."

The region's transformation into a beach resort began in the early 20th century when the discovery of mineral water wells and the construction of the Santa Fe Railroad brought tourists and investors to the area. The establishment of Carlsbad Mineral Water Spa (now Carlsbad Inn) and the development of the Flower Fields further solidified Carlsbad's reputation as a charming seaside destination. You can still buy Carlsbad Alkaline Water from the mineral springs at a small kiosk on Carlsbad Blvd.

Carlsbad Village is one of our favorite walks because it is so much more. With two urban wineries, two tasting rooms, several coffee houses, and a long beach and boardwalk it was hard to pick the best route. But that’s our job, and we are serious about it no matter how many visits it took us.
