Del Mar: Walk to the surf, end up on the turf

From its early days as a cherished destination for tourists and horse racing aficionados to its present-day status as a beloved beach town, Del Mar Beach continues to enchant visitors with its coastal allure and enduring community spirit. The iconic Del Mar Race Track, established in 1937, became a beloved venue for horse racing enthusiasts and remains a prominent fixture in the area. The Del Mar Fairgrounds host an array of events, from music concerts and food festivals to the famous Del Mar Fair (yes, we still call it that), drawing locals and visitors together in celebration of summer.

Our walk starts at Del Mar Plaza where you can decide on wine or coffee, will take you through downtown to an off-the-beaten-path cafe in a charming garden setting, through a quaint neighborhood and down to the beach. One of the best longboarding breaks in San Diego is at the end of 15th Street, and the walk through Dog Beach is always entertaining.
