Little Italy: Where History, Culture, and Culinary Delights say “Ciao!”
Little Italy's history dates back to the late 19th century when it was established by Italian immigrants who arrived in San Diego seeking a better life. These industrious newcomers found solace and camaraderie among fellow Italians, and the neighborhood grew into a thriving community. Originally, Little Italy spanned a much larger area (all the way east to Balboa Park), but over the years, parts of it were absorbed into downtown development. Despite this, the neighborhood has managed to retain its distinct character and cultural identity through the preservation of its Italian heritage and traditions, especially along India Street.
Saturday mornings in Little Italy include one of the best farmer’s markets in town, and its proximity to the San Diego Bayfront provides additional walking options with excellent views of the waterfront and the city skyline. Parking can be tricky and expensive, but we have a recommendation that will save you time and hassle at $5 per hour with a maximum of $15 per day.
Our walk will take you through the heart of Little Italy’s shops, restaurants, and historic buildings, down the hill through Waterfront Park, along the bay where the Star of India is docked, and back to our favorite parking garage.
