Newport Beach - Lido Peninsula
In the early 1900s, the Lido area was little more than swampland and tidal flats. However, visionary developers saw potential in this marshy expanse. The dredging of Newport Harbor in the 1920’s created new land, including the artificial Lido Isle and Lido Peninsula. This period marked the birth of Lido as we know it today - a chic, nautical neighborhood with a distinct character.
The post-war years saw Lido evolve into an upscale residential and recreational area. The development of Lido Marina Village in the 1970s added a charming maritime-themed shopping and dining district. This area became home to many "Newport Party Boats" available for events, as well as local restaurants and small business retailers.
Throughout its history, Lido has maintained strong ties to Newport Harbor. The area has been a hub for recreational boating, with approximately 9,000 boats calling the harbor home. Lido Marina Village has hosted the annual boat show and a popular Sunday farmers market, blending maritime tradition with modern amenities.
In 2014, recognizing the need for revitalization, Lido Marina Village underwent a significant renovation. The updated village reopened in 2017, breathing new life into this historic area while preserving its nautical charm.
The term "Lido" comes from the Italian word for "shore" and was popularized by the Lido di Venezia in Venice, which has attracted beachgoers since the 1850s. The Newport Lido area was inspired by this elegant European destination, giving it a touch of Italian flair.
Our Lido walk takes you from Lido Marina Village with its trendy shops and restaurants, along Via Lido and Lido Park Drive to the Lido Peninsula (be sure to tell the security guard that you are going to the Lido Tasting Room and they will let you in), over near the shipyard where the tasting room is located, and back again. This is a lesser-known part of Newport Beach that you will be telling your friends about!
