Bernardo Winery: An Inland Oasis of Wine, History, and Community

Bernardo Winery is the oldest working winery in Southern California and is definitely worth a visit. Founded in 1889 on what was a Spanish Land Grant, five business partners originally opened the winery, but with the start of Prohibition, the wine business diminished dramatically by 1927. Vincent Rizzo, first generation Rizzo owner, had the forethought to buy the winery from the dwindling partnership and continue production under the guise of sacramental wine for local churches. It has since remained a cherished part of San Diego's winemaking heritage.

From art festivals and craft fairs to live music performances and seasonal celebrations, the winery's events calendar always has something to offer. And if you venture over to this little gem on a Friday morning, you'll hit the weekly Farmer's Market! The winery grounds also feature a charming coffee shop where visitors can savor freshly brewed coffee, pastries, and light bites. With its shops, artist studios, and charming grounds all tucked into the architecture of the original century old winery buildings, Bernardo Winery is a perfect place to wander and shop while you sip coffee or your favorite glass of wine.

Our walk takes you on a stroll through the grounds, then off into the neighborhood via an inconspicuous sidewalk to a picturesque lookout point and back.

Parking

Bernardo Winery has a couple of small parking lots but there is plenty of on-street parking as well. Parking only really becomes a small issue when there is an event.

Restrooms

Restrooms available at Bernardo Winery.
